GAZA: An Israeli air strike killed at least three Palestinians, including a child, in the Gaza Strip today, after hitting a tent sheltering displaced people.

Health authorities said the strike hit a neighbourhood in Deir al-Balah in central Gaza. Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital said the fatalities were two men and an eight-year-old while a third man was wounded.

Israel’s military identified the target as Zaher Abu Salem, who it claimed was a member of Islamic Jihad.


GERMANY: Five people were killed in a shooting today in the northern German town of Stade, police said.

A suspect was arrested, German news agency dpa reported, citing police.

Police said shots were fired near a youth facility and they were conducting a major operation on Dankersstrasse, a street south of the town centre.

More information was not immediately available.


CLIMATE: More than 1,300 people have died across Europe over the past week due to the intense heatwave, the World Health Organisation reported on Sunday.

Europe is the fastest-warming region on Earth, with temperature increases double the global average.

Temperature records fell in Austria, the Czech Republic, France, Germany and Poland, with some areas hitting 40°C on Sunday.


EGYPT: The government announced on Sunday that it was beginning the process of privatising the country’s oil sector.

The Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources Karim Badawi confirmed the listing of Egyptian Linear Benzene Company, Petroleum Marine Services and Engineering for Petroleum and Chemical Industries on the Egyptian Exchange.

He said the listing was part of the “government privatisation programme” agreed with the International Monetary Fund.
