UNITED STATES: Washington sent five men it describes as “barbaric” criminals to the small African nation of Eswatini in an expansion of the Trump administration’s largely secretive third country deportation programme, the US Department of Homeland Security said on Tuesday.

The US has already deported eight men to another African country, South Sudan, after the Supreme Court lifted restrictions on sending people to countries where they have no ties.

CHINA: A Japanese man was sentenced today to three-and-a-half years in prison in China on espionage charges, according to the Japanese embassy in Beijing.

The embassy did not identify the man.

Japan’s Kyodo News Agency described him as an employee of Astellas Pharma Inc, a major Japanese pharmaceutical company.

TURKEY: A court today convicted Istanbul’s jailed opposition mayor and the chief rival to President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of insulting and threatening a public official and sentenced him to a year and eight months in prison.

The case against Mayor Ekrem Imamoglu, who is being held in a prison west of Istanbul since March 23, predates his arrest and stems from accusations he made against Istanbul chief public prosecutor Akin Gurlek that his investigations into opposition figures were politically motivated.

ICELAND: A volcanic eruption in Iceland today forced the evacuation of local residents on the Reykjanes peninsula, south-west of the capital Reykjavik, the national broadcaster RUV reported.

Some 100 people were evacuated from the town of Grindavik shortly after the seismic activity began. Tourists at a campsite and guests at the renowned Blue Lagoon spa were forced to quickly evacuate, RUV reported.
