Local police officers and Spanish civil guard agents take positions during the disturbances in Torre Pacheco, eastern Spain, Friday, July 12, 2025

SPAIN: Eight people have been detained by police following violent clashes between far-right groups, local residents and migrants in the Mercia region at the weekend, officials said today.

The clashes in Torre-Pacheco took place on Saturday night after an elderly resident had been beaten up by unknown assailants earlier last week, which led to a call by far-right groups to seek retribution against the area’s large migrant community.

The motivation for the initial attack was not clear.

CAMBODIA: Amid persistent border tensions with Thailand, Prime Minister Hun Manet said today that his country will introduce military conscription from next year.

Relations between the neighbours have deteriorated sharply following an armed confrontation on May 28 in which one Cambodian soldier was killed.

EUROPEAN UNION: Trade ministers met in Brussels today, following US President Donald Trump’s surprise announcement of 30 per cent tariffs on imports from the EU.

The bloc is the biggest business partner of the US and the world’s largest trading bloc. Mr Trump’s decision will have repercussions for governments, companies and consumers on both sides of the Atlantic.

VIETNAM: Fossil-fuel motorcycles and mopeds are to be banned from the heart of the capital Hanoi from July next year as part of a nationwide effort to curb air pollution, local media reported today.

The directive issued by Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh applies to the area inside and along the main ring road that encircles the city centre. The local government has been tasked with phasing out the two-wheelers by the deadline.
