SUDAN: At least 11.5 million people have been displaced and 3.1 million are seeking refuge in neighbouring countries, the United Nations said on Monday.

INDIA: At least nine workers are trapped inside a coalmine in the north-eastern state of Assam, officials said today, as authorities summoned the army to help in the rescue operation.

The miners were reported to be trapped around 300 feet below ground on Monday morning in the Umrangso area of Dimapur Hasao district, 125 miles south of the state capital Guwahati.

GREECE: The European Court of Human Rights, in a landmark ruling, found today that the government had illegally deported a woman, identified by her initials ARE, back to neighbouring Turkey, with judges describing the use of summary expulsions or “pushbacks” as systematic.

The woman was awarded damages of €20,000 (around £17,000) after the court ruled that she had been improperly expelled in 2019 after crossing the Greek-Turkish border, having been allowed no opportunity to make an asylum claim.

GHANA: John Mahama was set to be sworn in today as president for the third time.

Mr Mahama, who started his governmental career as communications minister, won a presidential election late last year after pledging to tackle Ghana’s economic crisis, corruption and unemployment.
