CONGO: Dozens of people were reportedly injured today after two explosions hit a meeting of M23 militia group leaders and residents in the captured city of Bukavu in eastern Congo.

Leaders of the M23 militia group were meeting residents when the explosions occurred in the central part of Bukavu.

INDONESIA: Two men in Indonesia’s conservative Aceh province were publicly caned today after an Islamic Shariah court convicted them for having sex with each other.

Dozens of people witnessed the caning at a hall in Banda Aceh’s Bustanussalatin city park.

Aceh is the only province in Indonesia to practice Shariah law. It has caned people for homosexuality since the Islamic law was implemented in 2006.

POLAND: A former Polish prime minister, Mateusz Morawiecki, was charged today with exceeding his powers when he ordered a presidential election to be carried out solely with postal votes during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Prosecutors say there were no legal grounds to organise the presidential election of 2020 in that way.

The proposed election was eventually postponed and conducted at polling stations several weeks later.

GERMANY: A court today sentenced two Afghan men to several years in prison for planning an attack on the Swedish parliament and killing lawmakers in response to the burning of copies of the Koran.

The Jena Higher Regional Court found the men guilty of, among other things, membership or support of a terrorist organisation abroad and conspiracy to commit murder.

The court handed one of them, aged 30, a prison sentence of five years and six months and the other, aged 24, a term of four years and two months.
