ISLAMIC STATE: The United States military has completed the transfer of thousands of the Islamic State group detainees from Syria to Iraq, where they are expected to stand trial in the future, the US Central Command said today.
The US said the transfer that began on January 21 saw US forces transporting more than 5,700 adult male IS suspects from detention facilities in Syria to Iraqi custody.
FRANCE: The Paris prosecutors office on Thursday said that nine people were being detained as part of an investigation into a suspected decade-long, €10 million (£9m) ticket fraud scheme at the Louvre.
The arrests that took place on Tuesday include two Louvre employees, several tour guides and one person suspected of being the mastermind, according to the prosecutors’ office.
NORTH KOREA: The sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said today that it was “sensible” for a South Korean government official to express regret for alleged civilian drone flights over North Korea but warned of retaliation if they recur.
The statement by Kim Yo Jong came after South Korean Unification Minister Chung Dong-young on Tuesday expressed “deep regret” over the flights and stressed that Seoul’s government seeks “mutual recognition and peaceful coexistence” between the neighbours.
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE: The United Nations general assembly voted overwhelmingly on Thursday to approve a 40-member global scientific panel on the impacts and risks of artificial intelligence.
UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres, who established the panel, called the adoption “a foundational step toward global scientific understanding of AI.”
This came amid strong objection to the panel by the United States.
