CANADA: Ottawa joined in the United States economic attack on China by imposing a 100 per cent tariff on imports of Chinese-made electric vehicles.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau also announced today that there will be a 25 per cent tariff on Chinese steel and aluminium.

He claimed the Chinese had “an unfair advantage in the global marketplace.”

SUDAN: A dam collapsed in Sudan’s eastern Red Sea state, sending water flooding over nearby homes, the country’s health ministry said. 

The ministry said that the Arbaat dam had collapsed and that resources had been deployed to the area to help the people who had been stranded.

A local official told the Sudanese news site Al-Tagheer that he believed there to be at least 60 dead.

PAKISTAN: A judge today acquitted a man who was charged with spreading misinformation that helped spark widespread rioting in Britain earlier this month, officials said.

The decision came less than a week after Farhan Asif, a web developer, was arrested in a raid on his home in Lahore, the capital of eastern Punjab province, and charged with cyberterrorism.

MPOX: The United Nations health agency today launched a six-month plan to help stanch outbreaks of mpox transmission, including ramping up staffing in affected countries and boosting surveillance, prevention and response strategies.

The World Health Organisation said that it expects the plan from September through February next year will require the equivalent of £103 million in funding and aims to improve fair access to vaccines, notably in African countries hardest hit by the outbreak.
