THE HAGUE: Sudan filed a case at the top UN court, accusing the United Arab Emirates (UAE) of breaching the genocide convention by arming and funding the rebel paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan’s deadly war, the court announced today.

The International Court of Justice said Sudan’s case concerns acts allegedly perpetrated by the RSF including “genocide, murder, theft of property, rape, forcible displacement, trespassing, vandalism of public properties, and violation of human rights” targeting the Masalit people.

The UAE said the case was “nothing more than a cynical publicity stunt.”

TURKEY: Security forces have killed 26 Kurdish militants in the past week, the Defence Ministry said today, despite the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) declaring a ceasefire on Saturday.

A Defence Ministry statement said the militants were killed in military operations in the Kurdish areas in the north of Iraq and Syria. It did not provide details on the circumstances of the clashes.

“Our Turkish armed forces will continue its operations in the region for the survival and security of our country,” the ministry said.

CANADA: Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said today that he expects the country to be in a trade war with the US for the foreseeable future after having what he called a colourful but constructive call with President Donald Trump this week.

Mr Trudeau said the two sides discussed tariffs, and that they are “actively engaged in ongoing conversations in trying to make sure these tariffs don’t overly harm” certain sectors and workers.

He also reiterated that Canada won't back down until the US lifts the sanctions.

GERMANY: A court convicted five people today of plotting to overthrow the government in a far-right coup and kidnap the former health minister.

The Koblenz Higher Regional Court sentenced the four ringleaders to prison sentences between five years to eight years. A fifth defendant received a sentence of just under two years.

The defendants, four men aged 46 to 58 and a 77-year-old woman, were accused of founding or being a member of a terrorist organisation called United Patriots.
