WELSH peace campaigners are inviting all Senedd members to attend a “peace summit” on the dangers of militarism on March 5.

The day of presentations will take place at the Senedd’s Pierhead building, on the theme Highlighting Militarism in Wales, and is organised by Heddwch ar Waith (Peace Action Wales). It’s sponsored by Plaid Cymru MS Heledd Fychan.

It will include a lunchtime session highlighting Parc Against Darc (Pembrokeshire Against Radar Campaign against Deep space Advanced Radar Concept), a grassroots movement to stop US President “Trump and Elon Musk’s attempt to dominate space” through a 27-antennae radar farm the US military wishes to build at Cawdor barracks in Pembrokeshire.

Plaid Cymru voted to oppose the US development at its conference last autumn. A campaign spokesperson said locals in Pembrokeshire “are demanding Labour not take Donald Trump’s side against the very Pembrokeshire people the party’s supposed to represent.

“The world watches on as Trump unleashes his dangerous and clearly deranged global agenda, the Welsh government must make a stand against this, and must under no circumstances allow Trump to militarily dominate space from Pembrokeshire.”

Heddwch ar Waith project co-ordinator Sam Bannon said: “Militarism in Wales occupies 23,000 hectares of land, utilises 85 per cent of our skies, and over 6,500 square kilometres of our sea.

“It is omnipresent in our schools, universities and public institutions. It already has deep ties with Trump’s White House, by way of MoD Sealand; Israel, by way of Aberporth [where drones used in Gaza have been developed]; and will soon put us on the front line of a new theatre of space war.

“During a uniquely dangerous era of high international tensions, being exacerbated by climate change, it is crucial now more than ever that governments pursue a policy of co-operation, peace and reconciliation, spending less on the military, and instead funding public services and a just transition to net zero.”

“Plaid Cymru has a long history of opposing militarism,” Heledd Fychan said.

“We are supporting the campaign by Pembrokeshire residents to the Darc proposal, and I strongly encourage all Senedd members to support and attend this important event to understand the strength of opposition and the reasons why this should be of concern to everyone in Wales.”
