HUNDREDS of Palestine supporters surrounded the Senedd today with a “human red line,” demanding urgent action to stop the Israeli genocide in Gaza.
The symbol has been drawn around the White House and the House of Commons, representing the red lines Israel has crossed through its ongoing genocide and violations of international law.
The historic action at the Welsh Parliament in Cardiff Bay brought together Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) Cymru, peace organisations, trade unions and environmental groups.
PSC honorary president Betty Hunter said: “We are here as the Red Line to shout out that we will not be complicit with genocide, and lawmakers at the Senedd must speak out as well.
“I hope one day we will see a Palestinian flag flying alongside the Welsh flag outside the Welsh Parliament.
“We stand witness to Israel’s undermining of all the safeguards put in place by the international community after WWII to strengthen human rights.
“We demand that Britain must stop arming Israel.”
Welsh Labour Senedd Member for Newport East, John Griffiths, spoke at his second Gaza demonstration in four days, after the protest outside the party’s annual conference in Llandudno.
“This Red Line protest is a powerful statement and means we are not bystanders but are making our actions felt,” Mr Griffiths said.
“We must get to a political settlement in the Middle East and an end to the genocide in Gaza. The British government must play a major role, and in Wales we must mobilise public opinion.
“I support the arms embargo and welcome the Co-op statement to stop stocking Israeli goods in its shops.”
PSC Cymru convener Zahid Noor said: “If starving children and the destruction of an entire people are not red lines, then I must ask: what is the red line for our First Minister, Senedd members and politicians in Wales?
“This Red Line action calls on Wales, as a nation committed to global responsibility, to stand on the right side of history.
“Public support for Palestine is growing rapidly across Wales and beyond.
“We urge members of the public and elected representatives to join us.
“Your presence will send a vital message of solidarity, and help shift the public and political discourse from words to meaningful action.”
