Welsh Labour leader met with local scepticism after 11th hour criticism of US plans for Pembrokeshire space radars
Labour First Minister of Wales Baroness Eluned Morgan addresses an audience of members and candidates at Newport Market, March 2, 2026

WELSH Labour leader Eluned Morgan’s opposition to US military plans for a 27-dish deep space radar array in Pembrokeshire has been met with scepticism from local campaigners.

The First Minister urged Westminster to stop working with the US on the proposals at Cawdor Barracks, known as Darc, this week because US President Donald Trump has “shown contempt for our country.”

The Parc Against Darc campaign, however, said her “surprise announcement” lacked “any real substance” as she was only calling for a project pause with “nothing to stop her doing another U-turn if re-elected.”

They added an overwhelmingly negative public response to the plans to the Ministry of Defence’s recent public consultation may have contributed to Ms Morgan’s “election jitters” over the issue.

A coalition between Plaid Cymru and the Wales Green Party “could well be set to stop Darc in its tracks by a means of ‘calling in’ the planning application to the Senedd once in power,” a spokesman for the group added.

He cited polling and the parties’ long-running public opposition to the Darc project.

A Plaid Cymru spokesperson said: “This is nothing but a last-ditch attempt by Eluned Morgan to cling on to her seat.”

Green Party leader Zack Polanski referred to Ms Morgan’s comments as “absolutely right” on X, adding: “Standing up to the US must mean more than words.

“Let’s get serious about national security by working closely with our EU neighbours and rapidly decoupling from a rogue US president.”

Iranian forces’ destruction of US military radars in Gulf countries would mean the project would make Pembrokeshire a “first priority target” in future conflicts, the campaign group said.
