Welsh activists join peace march to Gaza

PEACE activists from Wales arrived in Egypt today to join a humanitarian march to the Rafah border with Gaza.

The CND Cymru delegation will join a 3,500 strong humanitarian march demanding that Israel allows aid into the besieged territory.

An international collective calling itself The Global March to Gaza has organised the march involving people from 54 different countries.

They will walk through the Sinai desert to the Rafah border crossing at Gaza, demanding a halt to the genocide and the reopening of the border to allow a humanitarian corridor to be established.

More than 200 people are travelling from Britain to join the march.

Marcher Jo Barrow said: “We’ve got to get the aid in.

“We have to get world leaders to act in accordance with humanity, for the sake of our collective humanity.”

CND Cymru said the three-day, 30-mile march aims to reach Rafah by June 15.

Pembrokeshire campaigner Jim Scott has already arrived in Cairo and will join the march when it sets off on June 13.

On his arrival in Egypt, Mr Scott published an open letter to Pembrokeshire’s Labour MP, Henry Tufnell, and other politicians, including First Minister Eluned Morgan and Wales Secretary Jo Stevens.

His letter said: “I am writing as one of your constituents, and as a citizen of the United Kingdom, I feel I must act where you have not to prevent further genocide in Gaza.

“The UK government has been actively complicit by continuing to authorise RAF flights over Gaza for Israel and arming and funding them despite the confirmed slaughter of over 60,000 innocent civilians.

“I am aware that by marching to the Rafah border we may face arrest, detention, deportation or imprisonment.

“A worse outcome might be that we face military aggression and could even be killed ourselves by the Israeli army.”

It is not yet known whether the Egyptian authorities will allow the march, but the organisers have made it clear that the focus is to raise awareness and put pressure on Israel.
