US suspends assistance to Somali government over alleged seizure of aid
Workers distribute food aid from the World Food Program at a refugee camp in Dolo, Somalia on July 18, 2012

THE United States has suspended all aid that it was providing to the government of Somalia.

The US claims Somalian officials destroyed a United Nations World Food Programme warehouse filled with food aid it had funded.

President Donald Trump posted on social media: “The US is deeply concerned by reports that Federal Government of Somalia officials have destroyed a US-funded WFP warehouse and illegally seized 76 metric tons of donor-funded food aid for vulnerable Somalis.

“The Trump administration has a zero tolerance policy for waste, theft and diversion of life-saving assistance.”

There has been no immediate response from Somali officials to the allegations.

The move by the US continues the targeting by the Trump administration of Somalians. In recent months, President Trump has slammed Somalis living in the US and slapped restrictions on Somalis trying to enter the US.

President Trump has also launched racist attacks against the Somali community in the US, accusing them of “destroying America.”

He has also personally attacked Somali-born US House Representative Ilhan Omar, describing her as “garbage, just garbage.”
