UGANDAN opposition leader Bobi Wine has been shot in the leg in a confrontation with police just outside the capital, Kampala, with his party saying that he was “seriously injured.”

Video posted online showed Mr Wine surrounded by followers, who yelled that he had been shot before some helped him into a car. It was not immediately clear whether he was hit by a live bullet or a tear-gas projectile during Tuesday’s clash.

Images shared by close associates showed a bleeding wound below the left knee.

Confrontations between Mr Wine and the police have frequently descended into violence, but this is the first time that he has been wounded in such a way.

His National Unity Platform, which has more MPs than any other opposition party, posted on X that Ugandan security operatives had “made an attempt on the life” of Mr Wine, real name is Kyagulanyi Ssentamu.

Police said that Mr Wine had been advised not to stage a street procession when he left a private event in Bulindo.

They added that he had “insisted on proceeding and closing the road, leading to police intervention to prevent the procession.”
