HUNDREDS of pro-Palestinian protesters demonstrated in Kuala Lumpur today to oppose US President Donald Trump’s visit for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit.
Protesters gathered in Independence Square and the Ampang Park area at separate times, expressing opposition to Mr Trump’s support for Israel’s war on Gaza.
The US president was in Kuala Lumpur to attend the 47th ASEAN summit, where he oversaw the signing of a ceasefire deal between Cambodia and Thailand and announced a number of trade deals.
Choo Chon Kai, a leader of the Socialist Party of Malaysia, said he was attending the rally to protest against US foreign policy.
“This is a solidarity rally against US imperialism, as well as solidarity with the people of Palestine and people all over the world who are victims of US imperialism,” Mr Choo told Al Jazeera.
He expressed frustration that the protest had been moved from the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre, where the summit was held, and said police had been “very hostile” in shutting down the area originally designated for the demonstration.
At the summit, Mr Trump oversaw the signing of an expanded ceasefire deal between Thailand and Cambodia, which halted skirmishes along their disputed border.
Thailand will release Cambodian prisoners, and Cambodia will withdraw heavy artillery.
The agreement was hailed as historic by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and seen as a step toward lasting peace by Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.
Mr Trump also signed economic frameworks with Cambodia, Thailand, and Malaysia to boost trade, including in critical minerals, as part of the US strategy to reduce dependence on China.
The US president also met Brazilian President Luiz Inacio “Lula” da Silva amid frictions over Brazil’s prosecution of Jair Bolsonaro, the country’s former president and a close ally of Mr Trump.
Mr Bolsonaro was convicted last month of attempting to overturn election results in his country.
During their meeting, Mr Trump said he could reduce tariffs on Brazil that he enacted in a push for leniency for Bolsonaro.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was absent from the summit.
Despite a close relationship with Mr Modi in the past, Mr Trump caused tensions by boasting that he settled a recent conflict between India and Pakistan, and by increasing tariffs on India for its purchase of Russian oil.
