SEVERAL high-ranking US officials, including Army Secretary Dan Driscoll, are in Ukraine to help with peace talks, according to President Donald Trump’s administration.
Mr Driscoll is scheduled to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky this week, along with top Ukrainian officials.
The army secretary is accompanied by Army Chief of Staff General Randy George, General Chris Donahue, the US army’s top commander in Europe and Africa, and Sergeant Major of the Army Michael Weimer, a military official said.
Meanwhile, news reports suggest that Mr Trump has approved a 28-point plan for peace between Russia and Ukraine.
The leaked plan said by White House sources to have been quietly developed over several weeks in consultation with Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev.
Mr Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff, Vice-President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and the president’s son-in-law Jared Kushner were all reportedly involved in formulating the proposals.
The White House sources told NBC News that the framework still needed to be presented to the Ukrainian government, which had no involvement in shaping it.
Its details have yet to be confirmed, but the Reuters news agency and Axios website reported that it may include Ukraine giving up some land, including part of country’s east that Russia doesn’t yet control.
Kiev is also likely to have to give up some of its weapons and reduce the size of its armed forces in return for which Ukraine and the Europeans will receive security guarantees from the US.
The Russian government has “nothing new” to say on the matter, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said during his daily media briefing.
