Trade unions welcome Labour's 'game-changer' plan for a green new deal
Rebecca Long Bailey

A NEW plan to reindustrialise Britain by improving the economy’s environmental impact has been hailed as a “game changer” by trade unionists.

Unite members have lauded the “30 by 2030” plan, which was released yesterday.

The plan, developed by independent energy experts and commissioned by Labour, makes 30 recommendations to be achieved by 2030.

It outlines how 850,000 decent jobs could be created by assisting green industries such as the wind turbine and solar panel industry.

The document also recommends cutting down on energy waste by upgrading every home with insulation and double glazing, and developing nuclear power.

The experts argue that the change would increase average household incomes by 2 per cent and decisively tackle Britain’s carbon emissions.

Delegates at Labour’s annual party conference last month passed a motion that committed the party to a green new deal and decarbonising the British economy.

Unite national officer for energy Peter McIntosh said: “This plan is a ‘game changer’ in the debate about how we decarbonise energy in a way that boosts jobs and the economy, while protecting our environment for future generations.

“This radical plan will not only create 850,000 new skilled unionised jobs here in the UK, but also help end fuel poverty while boosting household incomes.”

Labour shadow business secretary Rebecca Long Bailey said: “Inaction on climate by Conservative and Lib Dem Coalition governments has led to a lost decade in the race to cut emissions from our energy system.

“The recommendations in this report could put the UK on track for a zero-carbon energy system during the 2030s — but only if rapid progress is made early on. The next five years are therefore crucial.”
