Tory MP Katie Lam condemned for demanding legally settled families be deported to make Britain 'culturally coherent'
Weald of Kent MP Katie Lam with then Tory leadership contender Robert Jenrick at the Conservative Party Conference in Birmingham, October 2, 2024

TORY MP Katie Lam faced a backlash today after making a racist call to deport families legally settled in Britain.

In an interview with the Sunday Times, the Weald of Kent MP suggested that legally settled migrants should be deported to make the country “culturally coherent.”

She said there were a ”large number of people in this country who came here legally, but in effect shouldn’t have been able to do so.”

“It’s not the fault of the individuals who came here, they just shouldn’t have been able to do so.

“They will also need to go home. What that will leave is a mostly, but not entirely, culturally coherent group of people.”

Slamming the remarks, Indian Workers Association (IWA) general secretary Sital Singh Gill said: “Families who came here legally, work hard, pay taxes, and contribute to the life of this nation are Britain.

“To tell them to ‘go home’ is not only racist but a betrayal of the values Britain claims to stand for.”

Stand up to Racism co-convener Sabby Dhalu, said: “Demanding large numbers of legally settled families must be deported, in order to ensure the UK is mostly ‘culturally coherent’ is quite simply racist.

“The Tories should pay some attention to opinion polls which illustrate that comments such as this, and Robert Jenrick’s racism, have not gained them a single vote.”

It comes after Mr Jenrick, the shadow justice secretary, said he was concerned by “not seeing another white face” in Handsworth, Birmingham, in a leaked recording.

At its conference earlier this month, the Conservatives vowed to clamp down on migration and introduce a “removals force” that would deport 150,000 “illegal” migrants a year, if they won power.

CEO of Care4Calais Steve Smith said: “The mask well and truly slips when politicians start attacking the rights of people with recognised status in the UK.

“These shameful comments from Katie Lam are reminiscent of recent announcements from Reform on removing indefinite-leave-to-remain rights and Labour banning family reunification.

“They reveal that the anti-refugee rhetoric we have become accustomed to from politicians has nothing to do with how someone fleeing war, torture and persecution arrives in the UK, but everything to do with an underlying racism at the heart of the debate on migration in this country.”
