GRETA THUNBERG joined climate campaigners, search-and-rescue workers and activists on World Refugee Day today as she signed a declaration linking the Gaza genocide, climate destruction and “fortress Europe.”
The Madleen declaration — named after the ship the Israeli military seized when it tried to break the country’s illegal blockade of humanitarian aid into Gaza — was drafted by the Palestinian Institute for Climate Strategy (Pics).
“The Freedom Flotilla in the Mediterranean showed us clearly that border violence, environmental destruction and the genocide in Palestine are all connected,” the declaration reads.
“The Mediterranean Sea has become a place where humanitarian ships and refugees are blocked whilst deadly arms and ecosystem-destroying fossil fuels move freely.”
The declaration calls for “a transformative social, environmental and political alternative to a Mediterranean Sea torn apart by state, corporate, and neocolonial violence.
“Together, we demand a shared home in which we all can thrive. In place of death and despair, we demand life and hope.”
Other signatories to the Madleen Declaration include: Global Justice Now, Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants, Freedom Flotilla Coalition, Fridays for Future, Belgium’s Anti-Zionist Jewish Alliance, Ireland's Palestine Solidarity Campaign, the US’s CodePink and many more.
