STUDENTS have launched an occupation at the University of Manchester demanding the institution sever its links with Israel.

Between 50 and 100 students have taken over the university’s Samuel Alexander building in protest at its links with two universities in Israel and a research partnership with British-based transnational “defence” and aerospace firm BAE Systems.

BAE Systems makes parts for F35 war planes supplied to Israel.

The building houses the university’s school of arts, languages & cultures.

One of the occupiers, third-year student Charlotte, told the Morning Star: “We are a group of students who believe the ongoing genocide is wrong and must stop. 

“This is our fifth occupation. We also staged an encampment.”

She said the occupiers are demanding the university cuts its ties with the Israeli universities, ends its partnership with BAE Systems, ensures that all university research is ethical and not linked to the arms trade and takes no disciplinary actions against students.

The university has academic links with the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, which the students say is built on illegally occupied land, and Tel Aviv University.

An occupation spokesperson said: “Last year, students were at the forefront of global solidarity with Palestine and we continue with the same spirit of defiance this year. 

“We begin this academic year relentless as ever in our pursuit of justice.”

On Monday, students plan to stage a demonstration as the university hosts an international academic summit, which runs until Wednesday.

Organisers of the demonstration, which takes place at Whitworth Art Museum from 5pm, say they expect support from students across Britain.
