STUC news in brief: April 16, 2024

EDUCATION: The Scottish TUC passed a range of motions on campaigning to reverse education cuts.
Delegates heard educators were suffering increased workplace violence and struggling to close the yawning poverty attainment gap.

SOCIAL SECURITY: The benefit sanctions regime should be scrapped, the STUC agreed today.
Removing financial support from citizens in crisis was leading to “suicides and unbearable hardship,” Congress heard. It determined to lobby politicians of all parties to pledge abolition of the sanctions regime.

ANTI-FASCISM: The STUC will work with the International Brigades Memorial Trust to begin dialogue with the Scottish government on commemorations for the 90th anniversary of the start of the Spanish civil war in 1936.
It agreed to work with its black workers’ committee to ensure the brigaders who fought fascism are remembered in plans for the annual St Andrew’s Day march in 2026.
