Steel worker strikes after Britain's largest contractor offers ‘0% pay rise’

MORE than 100 workers at Britain’s largest structural steel contractor are set to strike after being offered a 0 per cent pay rise, GMB said today.

Severfield PLC has provided the steel work for iconic projects like the Shard and the new Everton stadium.

More than 90 per cent of GMB members at its Bolton site voted to walk out next Monday and two days the next week.

GMB regional organiser John Weir said: “No worker anywhere deserves to be offered literally nothing.

“Regardless of losses in a single year, that workers should shoulder the burden is unacceptable.

“Severfield is a huge company, with revenues of nearly half a billion pounds.

“GMB has provided a range of options to settle this dispute, but Severfield continues to say 0 per cent is their final offer, so our members are left with no choice but to strike.”

The company was contacted for comment.
