WOMEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE: Anna Davies and Molly Jones both scored two tries as Wigan came from behind to beat St Helens 16-12 in the Super League Grand Final on Sunday evening. Played in front of a record crowd for the women’s game of over 5,000 it sealed a season treble for Wigan who also beat Saints in June’s Challenge Cup final and pipped them to the league leaders shield by just one point.
MEN’S CYCLING: World champion Tadej Pogacar won his first European road race gold medal in southern France on Sunday. The Slovenian made a solo attack with over 75km to go and finished 31 seconds clear of Belgium’s Remco Evenepoel with French rider Paul Seixas over three minutes further back in third. Only 17 of the 97 cyclists who started the race crossed the finish line. There were no British entrants.
MEN’S ICE HOCKEY: Coventry Blaze won 6-5 in Cardiff and bagged a 2-1 shoot-out victory over Guildford to move top of Group A in the Challenge Cup while defending champions Belfast slipped to shoot-out defeats at Fife and Dundee, who now lead Group B. Manchester kept their hopes of qualifying alive with a 6-3 win at Nottingham Panthers, who hit back with a 5-0 thumping of Cardiff on Sunday evening.
MEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE: Jake Shorrocks kicked five penalties as Toulouse Olympique edged to a 10-8 win at York Knights in the Championship Grand Final. York had won the league leaders shield by two points from the French club as well as the 1895 Cup and were on a 20-match unbeaten run prior to Sunday’s final. Despite their successes on the pitch neither club are guaranteed promotion to next season’s expanded Super League.
