Sport in brief: November 27, 2024

MEN’S RUGBY UNION: Liam Williams has left Japanese side Kubota Spears after just six appearances to sign for one of his former clubs Saracens.

Thirty-three-year-old Williams, who has 92 Welsh caps and four for the British and Irish Lions, made 31 appearances for Saracens, winning the English Premiership and European champions Cup with them in 2019.

He departed the club after they were found guilty of breaching salary cap rules in 2020.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Europa League action takes centre stage tomorrow evening with table-topping Lazio at home to a Ludogorets team that has yet to win while their nearest challengers Ajax are at struggling Real Sociedad.

Manchester United face Norway’s Bodo Glimt, Rangers are in Nice and Tottenham face Roma. Bottom club Dynamo Kiev will be looking for their first point when they take on Viktoria Plzen in Hamburg.

CYCLING: Tadej Pogacar’s dominance of men’s cycling season during 2024 didn’t need any further confirmation but he was duly named as the UCI’s best rider at Tuesday’s awards ceremony in Nice.

Pogacar scored almost twice the amount of points as second-placed Remco Evenepoel.

Lotte Kopecky picked up the women’s title with the Netherlands’ Shirin van Anrooij collecting the young riders’ trophy. Britain’s women won the junior team award.

MEN’S BASKETBALL: Group B table-toppers Valencia, the only team with a 100 per cent record in this year’s EuroCup, visit last year’s runners-up Bourg-en-Bresse tomorrow evening.

At the other end of the competition Poland’s Trefl Sopot, who have yet to pick up a point, travel to 2023’s champions Gran Canaria.

Group A leaders Bahcesehir Istanbul, who are yet to lose at home, host Spain’s Joventut Badalona, the league’s lowest scorers.
