MEN’S BOXING: David Benavidez defended his WBC light heavyweight crown with a seventh round knock-out of Anthony Yarde in Riyadh on Saturday night. Benavidez is now unbeaten in 31 professional bouts. On the undercard Maidstone-born Sam Noakes lost a unanimous points decision to Abdullah Mason for the WBO lightweight belt while Jesse Rodriguez stopped Fernando Martinez to become WBC, WBO and WBA super flyweight champion.
MEN’S CRICKET: Bangladesh completed a comfortable 217-run win over Ireland on Sunday morning in their second test and sealed a 2-0 series whitewash. Mushfiqur Rahim took the man of the match award with an unbeaten 56 and 103. Bangladesh had eased to an innings and 47-run victory in the first test. The teams will now contest three Twenty20 matches with the first leg starting in Chattogram on Thursday.
MEN’S FOOTBALL: Ferran Torres scored twice as Barcelona sealed a 4-0 victory over Athletic Bilbao in their first game back at Camp Nou for almost 30 months. The stadium is still undergoing redevelopment, some sections are closed and the match was watched by a crowd of just over 45,000. When completed the new capacity will be 105,000, the second largest football arena in the world behind North Korea’s 1st of May Stadium.
HORSE RACING: Trainer Chris Gordon and his son, jockey Freddie Gordon enjoyed a massive 462/1 treble at Haydock Park on Saturday. Diamond Hunter won the first race, David’s Well made it a rapid double before Electric Mason edged home by a neck to take the afternoon’s feature three-mile handicap hurdle. Andashan, their fourth horse on the racecard, finished second behind Cheltenham Festival hopeful Kabral Du Mathan.
