Sport in brief: May 19, 2025

WOMEN’S FOOTBALL: Linzi Taylor’s second-half volley earned Hibs a 1-0 win at Rangers and sealed the Scottish Premier League championship on the last day of the season for the Edinburgh club. Glasgow City beat Hearts 2-0 to finish as runners-up and denied Rangers qualification into Europe. At the other end of the table Montrose thumped Dundee United 4-0 to escape the drop as Spartans lost 2-1 against Partick and were relegated.

BASKETBALL: Jaylin Hunter and Zach Johnson both netted 23 points as Leicester thumped Newcastle 105-74 to become the men’s Super League’s play-off champions. Leicester were runners-up in the regular season, finishing three places and 18 points above Newcastle. Sheffield claimed the women’s play-off title after Georgia Gayle and Destinee Walker both weighed in with 19 points in their 73-63 win over Oaklands.

MEN’S CYCLING: Mexican Isaac del Toro takes a 73 second lead into stage 10 of the Giro D’Italia after he narrowly finished behind Wout van Aert on Sunday’s stage nine. Del Toro’s team-mate Juan Ayoso is second overall with Antonio Tiberi in third. Simon Yates is the highest placed Briton in sixth, one minute and 42 seconds behind the leader. Tomorrow’s stage is a relatively flat 29kms individual time trial from Lucca to Pisa.
