Snippets of news from the sporting world with JAMIE J

SPEEDWAY: Nick Morris top scored with 11 points and Peter Kildemand bagged 10+1 as the Berwick Bandits reached their first Knock-Out Cup final for 37 years after Saturday evening’s thumping 55-35 win over defending champions Poole Pirates. The Bandits took the two-legged semi-final 98-82 on aggregate. They will face Plymouth in the final following their narrow 91-89 victory over Redcar. Plymouth last won the Knock-Out Cup in 2008.

WHEELCHAIR RUGBY LEAGUE: Table-toppers Halifax Panthers extended their 100 per cent Super League record to seven games after seeing off previously unbeaten second-placed London Roosters 68-30 on Saturday afternoon. Bottom club Bradford remain without a win following their heavy 150-4 demolition at third-placed Leeds. Struggling Edinburgh are also still looking for their first points of the season after going down 38-70 at home to Sheffield.

MEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE: Runaway National Rugby League leaders Penrith suffered a surprise 26-12 defeat at North Queensland but still top the table by four points from the New Zealand Warriors, who were edged out 26-24 at third-placed Dolphins. Manly beat Melbourne 30-4 before bottom club St George Illawarra let a half-time lead slip in a 24-16 loss at Canberra yesterday morning and Newcastle came from behind to squeeze past the Wests Tigers 12-6.

MEN’S BOXING: Jaron Ennis stopped Xander Zayas in the seventh round of an entertaining bout in New York yesterday morning to become the unified light-middleweight world champion. Now a two-weight world champion, Ennis improved his unbeaten record to 36 fights while Zayas suffered his first defeat in 24. On the undercard, Bilston’s former Olympian light heavyweight Ben Whittaker stormed to an early second round stoppage of Jonathan Rivera.
