MEN’S TENNIS: 36-year-old Dan Evans, who was part of Britain’s 2015 Davis Cup-winning team, played his last professional singles match after losing 7-5, 6-0 to Australian Tristan Schoolkate in the qualifiers for this year’s Wimbledon tournament.

Evans reached a career-high ranking of 21 and won two ATP Tour events including the Washington Open in 2023. He will partner fellow Midlander Henry Searle in the doubles at Wimbledon.

MEN’S BOXING: Former super-flyweight world champion Joe Cordina has been forced to pull out of his challenge for Abdullah Mason’s WBO lightweight belt after being denied an entry visa to the US.

Cardiff-born Cordina, a European gold medallist who represented Britain at the 2016 Olympics, has lost only one of his 19 professional bouts, to Antony Cacace for the IBF/IBO super-featherweight title in May 2024.

MEN’S CRICKET: Northampton put the competition’s only 100 per cent record on the line when they host Essex as the T20 Blast resumes this evening.

They have won all six of their opening matches and top the Central and West Group by four points from Gloucester who visit Somerset.

The top teams from the South and North Groups clash at Southampton when Hampshire take on Yorkshire. Both teams have lost only once.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: The League of Ireland ploughs on regardless of the World Cup tomorrow evening with table-topping defending champions Shamrock Rovers up against Galway.

It’s second against third when St Patrick’s, six points off the pace but with two games in hand, play Bohemians in Dublin’s city derby.

Bottom club Waterford are at Dundalk and Derry City meet Drogheda as Sligo face Shelbourne on Saturday evening.
