SPEEDWAY: Tom Brennan top-scored with 11+1 points as the Ipswich Witches cruised past Leicester 54-36 on Monday evening to move a point clear of Sheffield at the top of the Premiership.

Defending champions Belle Vue Aces are a further three points off the pace in third after they came from behind to edge out King’s Lynn 48-42.

The Aces did not move into the lead until the last three heats.

The first game was drawn in Galle last week, with the Sri Lankans struggling on 72-4 as they chased 295.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Sampdoria, the Genoa-based club who were European Cup Winners Cup winners in 1990 and Serie A champions a year later, have avoided relegation to Italian football’s third flight.

They were awarded a 3-0 win in their play-off with Salernitana that was abandoned after smoke bombs and seats were thrown onto the pitch.

Sampdoria only reached the play-offs following Brescia’s eight point deduction for financial irregularities.
