WOMEN’S CYCLING:
A minute’s silence to honour Melissa Hoskins, who was killed after being struck by a car on New Year’s Eve, will take place before the Australian Women’s road race championship on Sunday.
Perth-born Hoskins was a five-time World Championship medallist on the track, including a gold in 2012, won bronze in the 2013 road team-trial World Championships and took the mountains’ classification at the 2015 Women’s Tour.
MEN’S FOOTBALL:
The Irish Cup fifth round resumes tomorrow with holders Crusaders tackling Championship side Ards, the competition’s most successful team, Linfield, hosting lowly Warrenpoint and Premiership champions Larne at perennial giantkillers Harland and Wolff Welders.
Elsewhere, part-timers Willowbank travel to Dungannon Swifts, fellow non-leaguers Rosemount Rec visit Loughall and 1955’s cup winners Dundela take on Newington.
MEN’S CYCLING:
Matthieu van der Poel continued his domination of the winter Cyclocross programme with a ninth straight win on the sand dunes in Koksidje, West Flanders that maintained his unbeaten record for this season.
Pim Ronhaar was second across the line, over a minute behind, with Wout van Aert third. Fem van Empel led from the start to win the women’s race from Lucinda Brand and Ceylin del Carmen Alverado.
MEN’S FOOTBALL:
While the Scottish Premiership takes its winter break the congested Highland League title race continues apace with table-toppers Brechin visiting in-form Nairn, third-placed Formartine at fourth-placed Buckie Thistle, Fraserburgh taking their five match winning run to Deveronvale and hard-to-beat Brora playing Lossiemouth.
Second-placed Banks O’Dee and bottom club Strathspey Thistle are not in action.
