Sport in brief with Jamie J: June 23, 2024

MEN’S RUGBY UNION: Glasgow Warriors scored three tries as they came from 13-0 down to beat the Bulls 21-16 and win the United Rugby Championship grand final at altitude in Pretoria on Saturday. Scotland international flanker Matt Fagerson was named as man of the match. The Warriors had finished fourth in the regular season before seeing off reigning champions Munster and Cape Town’s Stormers in the play-offs.

NETBALL: Mary Cholhok scored 47 points as defending champions Loughborough Lightning brushed aside London Pulse 59-47 to reach next Saturday’s play-off final. They will face this year’s league winners Manchester Thunder after they saw off the Severn Stars 63-54 in their semi-final. Manchester and Loughborough are the dominant modern-day forces in netball and have each won two of the last four finals.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Reigning champions Italy need to avoid defeat against Croatia at the Euros tomorrow evening to escape from the group stages. They will crash out of the tournament if they lose and Albania beat the already qualified Spain in the other group B game. England need to secure at least a draw against Slovenia in their final group game tomorrow to ensure that they stay in the competition.

WOMEN’S RUGBY UNION: Second-half tries from Pip Hendy, Emma Sing, Mia Venner and Hannah Jones helped Gloucester-Hartpury become English Women’s Premiership champions for the second consecutive season after they beat Bristol 34-26 in Saturday’s play-off final in Exeter. Gloucester had finished 18 points clear of third-placed Bristol when winning the league, losing just one of their 16 games and thumping Exeter 50-19 in their semi-final.
