Sport in brief with Jamie J: January 26, 2024

MEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE: The Challenge Cup second round kicks off on Saturday lunchtime with Leigh Miners against Stanningley being streamed live on the BBC i-player before Siddal visit St Helens-based Clock Face Miners and Doncaster Toll Bar take on West Hull. National Conference champions Hunslet are at Fryston, Hammersmith play West Bowling and fellow Londoners Wests Warriors meet Rochdale Mayfield. The Royal Navy face Thatto Heath on Sunday.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: For only the fourth time this season the Scottish Premiership has a full set of fixtures on the same day with league leaders Celtic, five points clear but having played a game more, hosting strugglers Ross County and second-placed Rangers travelling to St Mirren. Kilmarnock welcome Hibs to Rugby Park, St Johnstone are up against Motherwell, bottom-club Livingston play Dundee and third-placed Hearts meet Aberdeen.

MEN’S CYCLING: Danny Martinez, who left Ineos-Grenadiers to join the German-based Bora-Hansgrohe team at the end of last season, snapped up his first win of the year at the Colombian time-trial championships on Thursday. Brandon Rivera (INEOS) was second, followed by Rodrigo Contreras and Nairo Quintana two-and-a-half minutes behind Martinez in fourth. Egan Bernal finished sixth with Rigoberto Uran four minutes off the lead in eighth.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: After a group stage full of shocks that has eliminated Ghana, Algeria and Tunisia, the African Cup of Nations resumes this evening with the round of 16. Five-time winners Cameroon, who needed an injury time winner against Gambia to squeeze through, face three-time champions Nigeria and tomorrow’s other match sees Namibia, who have never reached the knockout stages before, take on Angola.

MEN’S BASKETBALL: The top two teams in British basketball clash in the first semi final of the BBL Trophy tomorrow afternoon as reigning champions Caledonia Gladiators tip off against runaway league leaders the London Lions. The Gladiators inflicted one of the Lions three domestic defeats this season back in early December. The winners will face either last year’s runners up Cheshire Phoenix or Leicester in tomorrow’s final at the Birmingham Arena.
