York Knights' Ata Hingano (centre) celebrates with his team mates after scoring a drop goal to give his side the lead during the Super League match at the Community Stadium, York, February 12, 2026

MEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE: Ata Hingano slotted home a late drop kick to earn Super League new-boys York a 19-18 win over defending champions Hull KR in Thursday evening’s rain-soaked curtain-raiser for the new season.

Hull KR were 18-6 up with 20 minutes to go when they had Mikey Lewis sin-binned for a deliberate trip.

Humberside neighbours Hull FC face Bradford and Wakefield host Toulouse in their opening matches on Saturday evening.

CRICKET: It’s not quite the Calcutta Cup, but England meet Scotland at the Twenty20 World Cup in Kolkata on Saturday morning.

Both teams have won and lost in their opening games, but the Scots sit second in Group C, two places above England on run rate.

Saturday’s other games see Ireland take on Oman and New Zealand up against South Africa in Ahmedabad. Defending champions India play Pakistan in Colombo on Sunday afternoon.

DARTS: Gerwyn Price beat Michael van Gerwen 6-3 to win Thursday night’s Premier League of Darts tournament in Antwerp.

Price beat Gian van Veen and Jonny Clayton on his way to the final, while van Gerwen saw off world champion Luke Littler and Josh Rock.

Van Gerwen tops the table after two of the competition’s 17 rounds, with pointless Josh Rock and Stephen Bunting joint bottom. The competition moves onto Glasgow next week.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Atletico Madrid stuffed defending champions Barcelona 4-0 in the first leg of their Copa del Rey semi final on Thursday night.

Madrid bagged all their goals in the first half and were coasting to victory long before Barcelona’s Eric Garcia was sent off.

Garcia had opened the scoring with a comical own goal in the 6th minute. Real Sociedad won 1-0 at Athletic Bilbao in the other last four first leg clash.
