Sport in brief: December 20, 2024

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL: The Super League’s top two clash on Saturday evening when the St Albans-based Oaklands Wolves travel to face Sheffield with both teams unbeaten in their opening five games of the season. Saturday’s other fixtures see Manchester host Durham, Newcastle play Cardiff Met and bottom club London looking for their first win at the Essex Rebels. Third-placed Leicester are in East Kilbride to face Caledonia on Sunday.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Goals from Marko Arnautovic and Kristjan Asllani sealed Inter Milan’s progress into the Copa Italia quarter finals with a 2-0 win over Udinese. They visit Lazio in the last eight while holders and 15-time winners Juventus will take on Empoli, AC Milan are up against Roma and last year’s runners-up and current Serie A table-toppers Atalanta meet Bologna. The winners of the cup qualify for the Europa League.

MEN’S RUGBY UNION: United Rugby Championship action continues with a weekend of local derbies as league leaders Leinster put their hundred per cent record on the line against Connacht in Dublin on Saturday evening. Defending champions Glasgow, who sit second in the table, take on Edinburgh on Sunday while Treviso face Zebre and Ospreys host the Scarlets. In South Africa the Sharks host Pretoria’s Bulls and the Lions visit Cape Town’s Stormers.

MEN’S CRICKET: Sediqullah Atal scored his maiden one-day international century as Afghanistan steamrollered Zimbabwe by 232 runs in Harare on Thursday. Chasing 286 the hosts were skittled for 54 with only two players reaching double figures. The Afghanis lead the three match series 1-0 before today’s final leg after the first game was abandoned. Zimbabwe are currently ranked as the world’s 12th best one-day team, four places below Afghanistan.
