HORSE RACING: Talgarth-born Geoff Lewis, who became the only Welshman to ride a Derby winner when he steered Mill Reef to glory in 1971, has died aged 89. He also rode Mill Reef to victories at the Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe and five other classics in the same year as his Derby success. Lewis won 1,880 races in Britain before retiring to train almost 500 winners in a twenty year career.
MEN’S FOOTBALL: There will be no Scottish teams in the Champions League after Rangers were thumped 6-0 at Club Brugge on Wednesday evening to lose 9-1 on aggregate and follow Celtic out of the competition at the play-off stage. The Celts drew both legs of their tie 0-0 before losing on penalties to Kazakhstan’s Kairat Almaty, who will now make their debut in the league phase alongside fellow newcomers Bodo/Glimt, Pafos FC and Union Saint-Galloise.
WOMEN’S ATHLETICS: Morgan Lake became the first British high-jumper to clear two metres when she finished third at Wednesday’s Diamond League event in Zurich. Australian Olympic silver medallist Nicola Olyslagers took first place with a jump of 2.04 metres and Ukraine’s world champion Yaroslava Mahuchikh was two centimetres back in second. Lake is the 86th woman worldwide to have cleared two metres in competition.
MEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE: Super League table-toppers Hull KR host form-team St Helens at Craven Park tomorrow evening. The Saints have only lost one of their last 10 games since being crushed 34-4 by the west Hull side back in May. Second-placed Wigan, who are four points of the pace, visit the Catalans on Saturday. The French team will be without ex-Wigan legend Sam Tomkins after the 36-year-old announced his second retirement.
