General Strike Anniversary
Sport in brief: April 22, 2026

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Second-half goals from Reece McAlear and Ruari Paton earned St Johnstone a 2-0 win at Dunfermline that sealed the Scottish Championship title just a year after they dropped out of the Premiership.

The Saints kept faith in Finnish manager Simo Valakari despite relegation and have led the table all season.

Second-placed Partick Thistle, who they thumped 5-1 on the opening day, are already assured of a play-off semi-final spot.

MEN’S CRICKET: New Zealand face Bangladesh in Chattogram tomorrow for the deciding leg of their three match one-day series.

The Kiwis won the first game by 26 runs before the hosts cruised to a comfortable six wicket win in Mirpur on Monday.

New Zealand are currently ranked as the world’s second best 50-overs team, seven places above Bangladesh. The teams are due to start a three-match Twenty20 series next week.

MEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE: Just two points separate the Super League’s top six before the latest round of fixtures kick-off tonight with a bottom of the table clash between York and Toulouse.

Both clubs were promoted last year and have won two of their eight games.

Tomorrow evening’s other games sees Huddersfield, who are level on points with York and Toulouse, visit Leigh. Table-toppers Leeds face Catalans Dragons on Friday night.

WOMEN’S GOLF: The year’s first major tees-off in Houston tomorrow morning, just two days after Australia’s Hannah Green continued her superb form by winning a fourth championship of the season.

Green won the Australian Open in March and followed that up with victories at the LPGA World and Australian World Championships.

She is currently ranked as the world’s fifth-best player with Thailand’s Jeeno Thitikul top of the list.
