Smith retires from ODI’s after Champions Trophy exit
Australia's Steve Smith, July 21, 2023

AUSTRALIA batter Steve Smith has retired from one-day international cricket following his side’s Champions Trophy exit.

Smith, who captained the side during the tournament in Pat Cummins’s absence, made 73 in the four-wicket semi-final defeat to India in Dubai.

The 35-year-old, who intends to play on in Test and T20 international cricket, finishes his ODI career with 5,800 runs at an average of 43.28, including 12 centuries.

“It feels like the right time to make way,” Smith said in a Cricket Australia statement. “It has been a great ride and I have loved every minute of it.

“There have been so many amazing times and wonderful memories. Winning two World Cups was a great highlight along with the many fantastic team-mates who shared the journey.

“Test cricket remains a priority and I am really looking forward to the World Test Championship final, the West Indies in the winter and then England at home. I feel I still have a lot to contribute on that stage.”
