ATHLETICS: The UK took gold in the women’s 4 X 100 metres relay on the last day of the European Championships in Rome to take their medal tally to 13, finishing third in the table behind runaway winners Italy and second-placed France.

The UK’s other gold medals were won by Keely Hodgkinson successfully defending her 800 metres title, Dina Asher-Smith in the 100 metres and the women’s half-marathon team.

MEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE: Recently crowned Challenge Cup winners Wigan will be without the injured Jai Field when they travel to Castleford tomorrow evening in search of a win that will move them top of the Super League.

Current leaders St Helens are not in action until Sunday when they visit bottom club London Broncos.

Elsewhere, on Friday evening, third-placed Hull KR are up against Huddersfield and Challenge Cup runners up Warrington take on Salford.

MEN’S BOXING: Germany’s Abass Baraou will make the first defence of his European super welterweight title against Britain’s Macaulay McGowan in his home town of Manchester tomorrow night.

Baraou won the title in March with a points decision over Sam Eggington that improved his professional record to 15 wins from 16 bouts. He is currently ranked as the World Boxing Council’s eighth-best super middleweight.

MEN’S BASKETBALL: Jayson Tatum hit 31 points and Jaylen Brown weighed in with 30 as the Boston Celtics held off a late rally from the Dallas Mavericks to win 106-99 on Thursday morning and take a commanding 3-0 lead in their seven match NBA finals series. No team has ever come back from a 3-0 deficit to take the title.

The fourth game tips off in Dallas again on Saturday morning.
