Chris Billam-Smith celebrates victory by unanimous decision following the WBO World Cruiserweight bout at Selhurst Park, London, June 15, 2024

BOXING: Bournemouth’s Chris Billam-Smith retained his WBO Cruiserweight title at Selhurst Park on Saturday night, improving his record to 20 wins and one loss, with a unanimous points decision over compatriot Richard Riakporhe.

In other title action Manchester’s Macaulay McGowan failed in his attempt to win the European Boxing Union’s light-middleweight belt after losing on points to Germany’s Abbas Baraou in Bolton.

NETBALL: Manchester Thunder finished their regular season Super League campaign with a resounding 68-32 win against Leeds that sealed a clear six-point advantage at the top.

Runners-up Loughborough beat off the Severn Stars 72-60 while third-placed London Pulse were held 54-54 at Saracens.

Surrey Storm won 58-51 at the Strathclyde Sirens and Team Bath finished bottom of the table after slumping to a 58-41 defeat in Cardiff.

MEN’S RUGBY UNION: Despite playing 20 minutes with a man down Glasgow Warriors earned a 17-10 win at defending champions Munster to set up a United Rugby Championship grand final against the Bulls in Pretoria next Saturday.

Sergeal Pearson scored two tries as the Bulls held on to beat Leinster 25-20 in the other semi-final.

The Bulls have never won the championship before while Glasgow last picked up the silverware in 2015.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: France kick off their Euros campaign tomorrow evening with a Group D match against Austria in Dusseldorf.

The French are currently ranked as the world’s second-best team behind Argentina, 23 places above Austria, but have not won this tournament since 2000. Elsewhere tomorrow Group E gets under way with Romania up against Ukraine in Munich and Belgium taking on Slovakia at the Frankfurt Arena.
