As the Gunners celebrate the Premier League title, questions remain over why one of the most diverse clubs in the world provokes such hostility, writes LAYTH YOUSIF
MANCHESTER CITY forward Khadija Shaw paid tribute to her team-mates as she capped another memorable individual campaign by collecting the Football Writers’ Association women’s Footballer of the Year award in London.
Shaw, 29, won the Golden Boot for a third successive season with 21 goals as City took a first Women’s Super League title in a decade.
The Jamaica forward is out of contract in June, and has been linked with a move to Chelsea.
Shaw, speaking ahead of the Footballer the Year dinner, admitted it had been a campaign which again exceeded all expectations.
“It still hasn’t sunk in yet, to be honest,” Shaw told the FWA.
“For me I just want to be the best version of myself.
“And for me the biggest thing is it has always been about consistency, how often can you do it in big moments.
“It is just working hard and the chemistry with your team-mates.
“I always say that the quality that I have around me makes me look good.”
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes took the FWA men’s award, and was presented with his Footballer of the Year trophy by Red Devils’ boss Michael Carrick.
Fernandes became just the third player to provide 20 assists in a Premier League season, joining Arsenal great Thierry Henry and Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne.
