Sajid Javid in New Years Honour list
Former health secretary Sajid Javid leaves Dorland House in London after giving his evidence to the UK Covid-19 Inquiry in its second investigation (Module 2), exploring core UK decision-making and political governance, November 29, 2023

FORMER Cabinet minister Sajid Javid is among those to be included on the New Years Honours list.

Mr Javid abruptly resigned from multiple roles, most famously from Boris Johnson’s Cabinet, kick-starting the end of the prime minister’s premiership.

Honours are awarded by the ruling monarch based on recommendations from current or outgoing prime ministers to celebrate the contributions they have made to their community.

The Tory MP and former banker, who is standing down in the next general election, has previously faced threats of legal action from Momentum for calling the group “neofascist” and former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn for claiming he was a Holocaust denier.

He has also faced criticism from Muslim groups over failures to address Islamophobia in his party and human rights campaigners for his anti-migration stances, as well as his alleged links to tax avoidance schemes.

Mr Javid joins several politicians in receiving honours in the annual list, including Labour’s Dame Margaret Beckett and Siobhain McDonagh and Tory backbencher Mark Garnier.

Wetherspoon pub chain boss Tim Martin is also knighted amid reports a government minister pushed for his nomination to reward his Brexit campaigning.
