MEN’S RUGBY UNION: New Zealand responded to last week’s defeat against Argentina by running in seven tries to steamroller Los Pumas 53-3 in the return match.

The All Blacks now top the Rugby Championship, with Australia, South Africa and Argentina all level just one point below them after the Springboks comfortably saw off Australia 24-8 in Sydney on Saturday.

The Wallabies host New Zealand in Melbourne in 10 days time.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Celtic thumped Rangers 4-0 to maintain their 100 per cent start to the season and climb five points clear of their Glasgow neighbours at the top of the Scottish Premiership.

Aberdeen moved third with a 1-1 draw at Ross. Hibernian edged out Kilmarnock 1-0, St Johnstone brushed off St Mirren 3-0, bottom of the table Dundee United drew 0-0 at Motherwell and Livingstone beat Hearts 1-0.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Table toppers The New Saints preserved the only unbeaten record in the Cymru Premier with their 2-0 win at Pontypridd, while Cardiff Met saw off Flint 3-0 to move second.

Bottom of the table Airbus UK went down 3-1 in Caernarfon, Aberystwyth slipped into the relegation zone after losing 4-1 to 10-man Bala, Connah’s Quay beat Penybont 2-0 and Newtown won 3-2 at Haverfordwest.

WOMEN’S RUGBY UNION: England scored eight tries as they sauntered to a convincing yet largely unspectacular 52-14 win over the United States in the first of their World Cup warm-up matches.

The Red Roses have now won a record-breaking 24 tests in a row and are favourites for the tournament, which begins in New Zealand in October, where they will face Fiji, South Africa and France in Group C.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Glentoran beat Newry City 3-0 to stay top of the Irish Premiership by a point from Coleraine, 5-0 victors at bottom club Dungannon Swifts and Cliftonville, who won 2-1 at winless Portadown.

Ten-man Larne fought back to draw 1-1 at Crusaders, Linfield won 4-0 in Ballymena and Curtis Allen’s spectacular overhead kick earned Carrick a 2-2 draw at Glenavon who had Robbie Garrett sent off in the second half.

MEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE: NRL leaders Penrith lost only their fourth game of the season as Valentine Holmes ran riot in a 38-8 win for North Queensland.

Cronulla saw off Newcastle 38-16 to move second, while Melbourne slumped to a 22-14 loss at Parramatta.

Canterbury squeezed past Manly 21-20, The Roosters beat the Rabbitohs 26-16, Brisbane’s play-off hopes ended in a 22-12 defeat at St George, Gold Coast edged the NZ Warriors 27-26 and Canberra thrashed the Wests 56-10.

MEN’S RUGBY LEAGUE: Leeds left it too late to seal a 14-8 comeback win against Castleford and set up a trip to the Catalan Dragons in the first Super League play-off eliminator next Friday.

Huddersfield, who finished the regular season in third, will face Salford in the other eliminator.

Champions St Helens and runners up Wigan await the winners in the semi-finals before the final at Old Trafford on September 24th.

MEN’S FOOTBALL: Derry continued their recent good run with a 3-0 win over bottom club UCD and moved within four points of League of Ireland leaders Shamrock Rovers, who lost 1-0 in the Dublin Derby at Bohemians.

Form-team St Patrick’s beat struggling Finn Harps 2-1, Dundalk were held 0-0 by Shelbourne and goals from Frank Liivak and Aidan Keena earned Sligo a 2-0 win over Drogheda.
