ROMA’S sporting director Monchi urged Italian clubs today to “raise their voices” after blaming a lack of video assistant referees for the team’s failure to beat Liverpool to a Champions League final place.

The Giallorossi, trailing by three goals from the first leg, won 4-2 at the Stadio Olimpico yesterday, with Radja Nainggolan scoring twice and Edin Dzeko once to add to James Milner’s own goal.

Sadio Mane and Georginio Wijnaldum scored in the first half to further Liverpool’s cause, but Monchi believes Roma were denied what would have been a goal to make it 5-2 and force extra time.

No penalty was given when Trent Alexander-Arnold appeared to block Stephan El Shaarawy’s goalbound shot with his hand just after the hour mark while Dzeko was brought down by Loris Karius, only for the Bosnian striker to be controversially flagged offside, negating the prospect of any foul by the goalkeeper.

Monchi said: “At Anfield we conceded a goal that was offside and today there were two penalties not given to us, one of which should have led to a red card.

“It would have been different with VAR.

“It’s time to raise our voice on this because it’s not just Roma who are in this situation. A similar thing happened to Juventus against Real Madrid.

“Congratulations to Liverpool for going through, but certain things need to be looked at. It would have changed a lot because we only needed one more goal.

“I haven’t been in Italy for long and I’m Spanish, but I think Italian football should raise its voice because I don’t think all this is normal.

“I don’t understand why VAR isn’t used in the biggest club competition there is. I’ve always defended VAR in Italy. You still get some mistakes, of course, but a lot fewer.”
