Road safety raised at First Minister’s Questions
20mph road signs in Brynawel, Wales

ROAD safety in Wales was raised at today’s First Minister’s Questions, highlighting the 1,270 fall in casualties in the two years since the introduction of the 20mph default speed limit.

Former transport minister Lee Waters said Reform and the Welsh Conservatives wanted to reverse the policy.

First Minister Eluned Morgan said: “It’s worth noting that there have been 33 per cent fewer collisions in 2025 than there were in 2023.”

Reform UK’s Laura Ann Jones said road casualties had gone down right across Britain because cars were becoming safer.

Ms Morgan pointed out that the reduction in the number of police-recorded collisions in Wales was 22 per cent, compared to 4 per cent in England.

She also said it was worth reflecting on the fact that there were 1,270 fewer casualties and “think about the impact of that on the NHS.

“Let’s deal with facts, and I know it’s Reform, and that’s difficult for you, but there are insurance companies now who are actually offering a 20 per cent reduction for car insurance in Wales.”
