MORE Derby and Oaks trials, a cracking Swinton Handicap Hurdle day at Haydock Park and the cavalry charge that is the Victoria Cup at Ascot; not bad for the weekend after the Guineas!
Lingfield Park isn’t the easiest of tracks to ride or run on, hence Epsom aspirants tried their hand there first before hopefully moving onto the Surrey course in June.
The boys rock up at 2.40 for the Derby Trial and WALK OF STARS looks the logical choice for this small field trial following his success at Newbury, which didn’t impress everybody.
I was at the track that day, though, and this son of Dubawi will be much better served by a quicker pace and by the step up in trip which he is bred to relish.
He also looks the sort to take major steps forward as the season goes on and this, I hope, will be the first of them with William Buick having chosen to ride him in preference to stable mate, Natural World, who looks a fascinating runner as well and is not altogether written off.
Of the rest of the five-runner field, I also expect the big outsider, Lionel, to outrun his price.
A twice-raced maiden, the son of Lope De Vega, was only half a length off Natural World at Newbury and if he too takes another step forward then it is no impossible that he will reverse that form with the Godolphin colt.
The fillies’ trial at 3.15 has a bigger field and looks more open with Aidan O’Brien’s charge, Emily Dickinson at the head of the betting.
She readily won a Naas maiden by a neck, but it was a lot more comfortable that the winning margin and I make her the logical danger to my selection, BELT BUCKLE.
John and Thady Gosden haven’t really kicked into gear this season, but this filly returns to the track with any amount of potential.
The result of her victory in a Wolverhampton maiden in February has hardly worked out well, but none of those in behind having won since.
But she is a beautifully moving athlete and she could easily take the huge step forward that she needs to be competitive here.
In the supporting races, STARRY EYES, has finally reached a handicap mark which should see her go close now that she returns to a more suitable trip of seven furlongs at 2.05.
But an even better wager could be GOLDEN VALOUR in the 1m5f handicap due off at 4.25.
This Robyn Brisland-trained charge badly needed the run first time up at Lingfield and has been dropped a full 5lbs here, and this extra yardage will be hugely in the favour of this son of Kingman.
The Victoria Cup Handicap is a real cavalry charge over the straight seven furlongs with a field of 28 set to go to post at 4.05.
Godolphin have a strong presence at the head of the weights and sixth of 14 in last year’s 2,000 Guineas behind Poetic Flare, ONE RULER (nap) could prove to be well handicapped here even off a mark of 107.
A fast-run race over this trip should prove right up his street and he is on offer at a workable each-way price and is preferred to the nicely handicapped Mums Tipple (given a real chance off a rating of 99) and Eagleway (second in this race last year off a 3lbs lower mark, who has threatened to win a race of this nature for a while from an in from yard. A few showers would certainly help his cause.
The Listed Buckhounds Stakes at 2.20 over a mile and a half looks a cracking renewal and I have long thought that Al Aasy has always been at his best when fresh.
However, I am a little bit worried that the ground may ride a tad on the fast side for him and he makes the market for us having an each-way play on MANDOOB (hopefully eight stand their ground).
He is rated fully 13lbs lower than the market leader, but is thoroughly unexposed. Unlike the fav, he will relish rattling fast ground which the weather forecast promises and will have come forward for his seasonal debut run behind Scope here in the Noel Murless Stakes, when the give in the ground quite clearly didn’t suit him.
There is a mixed card at Haydock Park with the famous spring handicap hurdle, the Swinton once again at the feature race.
Top weights Milkwood and West Cork both have their chances here after running well in some top handicap hurdles this year, but the outstanding each-way play could be ANNA BUNINA.
A game winner of the Scottish Handicap Hurdle at Ayr, her penalty will be negated by her 5lbs conditional here and she remains nicely treated getting weight from some classy rivals.
The three mile handicap hurdle at 2.25 also has a big entry, but several of the leading players here have stamina doubts even around this sharp track.
Former classy chaser Danny Whizzbang has a chance from the bottom of the weights, and he could well be the biggest danger to my main fancy HONEST VIC.
The nine-year-old simply didn’t take to chasing earlier this season, but his return to hurdling has resulted in a cracking fifth of 22 in the Pertemps Hurdle Final at the Cheltenham Festival.
Set to race off the same mark here, I suspect that Richard Patrick will hold his charge up for as long as possible before making his challenge hopefully after the last flight.
The likes of Pileon (given a chance by the assessor) and Hurricane Harvey (first time blinkers) are also respected.
Finally have a second look at the card at Nottingham where FOUR ADAAY has solid claims in the five furlong handicap at 2.10 and HELENE (nb) in the three-year-old handicap at 3.55.
Richard Hannon’s filly had a lovely pipe-opener at Leicester when she made eye-catching late headway and has been dropped a pound for that hugely promising run. She looks a solid each-way play in a wide open event.
