Plaid's House of Commons leader slams Tory's ‘permanent cost of inequality crisis’
Plaid Cymru's Liz Saville Roberts

WELSH nationalist leader in the House of Commons Liz Saville Roberts slammed 13 years of Tory chaos and a “permanent cost of inequality crisis” at the weekend.

Speaking at Plaid Cymru’s conference in Aberystwyth, she said: “Flung from Johnson’s frying pan into Truss’s fire, we’ve been left with sky-high mortgages, rents and bills.

“Sunak runs from one culture war to the next in the hope of distracting us from the damage he’s unleashing from his ivory tower.”

Ms Saville Roberts told delegates that the disunited kingdom of 2023 is a place where refugees and LGBT+ people are the target of vile hatred from the party of government.

“Transphobia and xenophobia are completely normalised, driven by weak politicians who stand for nothing,” she said.

“Wales rejects Suella Braverman’s demonisation of refugees and LGBT+ people and the politics of division and discrimination.”

Ms Saville Roberts also turned her fire on Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer, accusing him of taking Welsh voters for granted.

She also said Sir Keir’s party is distancing itself from Wales’s First Minister Mark Drakeford.

Ms Saville Roberts claimed that Labour MPs from Wales “ignore or pour scorn on the views of Welsh Labour in the Senedd.”

She said: “I tabled a motion two weeks ago congratulating the Welsh government and Plaid Cymru for bringing forward a radical set of measures to strengthen Welsh democracy in stark contrast to Westminster’s archaic model.”

The motion was signed by the three Plaid MPs, but not by any other Welsh MP from either of the two main parties.

Ms Saville Roberts told delegates that 90 per cent of Welsh Labour MPs are in shadow ministerial posts and would be looking to become ministers in a Starmer government.

“Those MPs’ focus will be on advancing the interests of the next Labour government, not on delivering for communities,” she said.

She predicted that despite Welsh Labour calling for Wales to receive the billions of pounds it is owed from the funding of the HS2 high-speed rail project, they would remain silent when Sir Keir in government also ignored fair funding for Wales.

“We know they’ll make excuses. Because for Labour, party comes before country,” Ms Saville Roberts said.

“Plaid Cymru will always take action for Wales. We’ll always put our country first.”
