ENVIRONMENT campaigners are urging the new Plaid Cymru government to deliver on its pledge to make Wales net-zero by 2040.

Friends of the Earth Cymru called on the Welsh government today to show bold ambition across all Cabinet areas, including banning coal extraction, delivering warm and energy-efficient homes, prioritising public transport over road schemes and protecting communities from pollution.

Recent polling commissioned by the group found that 60 per cent of Welsh adults are worried about climate change, rising to 78 per cent among young people.

Some 81 per cent support more funding for home energy efficiency, and well over half hold an unfavourable opinion of coal.

FOE Cymru director Haf Elgar said: “Our polling makes it clear people want action to tackle the climate and nature emergencies, which will bring down the cost of living, improve health, and reduce inequality.

“We need a home energy efficiency programme which rids Wales of fuel poverty and gives everyone a warm home, air pollution targets so that every child has clean air, and accessible public transport for every community.”

The Welsh government was approached for comment.
