This will be a game West Ham debutant Kalvin Phillips will want to forget, after setting up Bournemouth's opening goal, in this hard fought draw at the London Stadium.
The game was just into the second minute, when Kurt Zouma played a short pass to Phillips, who stretching, only succeeded in passing the ball onto Dominic Solanki, who easily finished pass Alphonse Areola.
Bournemouth should have doubled their lead, when Solanke played in Antoine Semenyo, who was clear in on goal but Areola pulled off a brilliant point blank save.
A lethargic West Ham had little to show in the first half, with Mohammed Kudus having his shot saved with his feet by keeper Neto. Then, Tomas Soucek headed over a Kudus cross.
The home side were a bit more inventive in the second half, with Soucek heading an early Ward-Prowse free kick wide. West Ham then drew level, when Kudus was hauled down in the area by Lloyd Kelly.
Referee Tim Robinson initially ruled play on but was overruled by VAR. Ward-Prowse converted the resulting penalty kick.
Ryan Christie then whipped a shot wide of the post for the visitors.
West Ham manager David Moyes declared himself happy with the point but not the performance.
"We got back into it, then didn't perform," said Moyes, who felt Bournemouth were given a leg up with the early goal.
The West Ham manager acknowledged that Phillips may need some easing in. So honours even on the night was probably a fair result
