EARLY years workers, parents and the GMB union have launched a campaign to save nurseries in Barnsley from privatisation.

The union warned today that there are just three weeks to prevent Barnsley council’s plan to transfer control of the nurseries to private operators.

Staff and parents have raised deep concerns over the potential consequences for quality of care and vital safeguarding opportunities should the plan get the green light. It is set to be discussed at a full council meeting on February 27.

GMB organiser Vicky Austin said: “What Barnsley Council is proposing is outrageous.

“These nurseries provide exceptional care and support to some of the most vulnerable children in the most deprived areas of Barnsley.

“It is unacceptable that councillors are considering selling off these services to a private operator.

“Parents, staff and GMB are united on this issue – we will not stand by while Labour councillors vote to dismantle vital services.”

The council has been contacted for comment.
