Nurses at Guy's and St Thomas' hospitals win reduction in ‘unsustainable’ working hours after strikes

NURSES at Guy’s and St Thomas’ hospitals in London have won a reduction in “unsustainable” working hours after taking strike action.

About 100 nurses went on strike in June, July and September over extensions to their shifts, which their union Unite said were “impacting their physical and mental health and personal lives.”

The nurses work day shifts in the hospitals’ operating theatres.

Following negotiations with Unite, Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust agreed to “significantly reduce the number of late-night finishes required of the nurses,” the union said.

Unite general secretary Sharon Graham said: “Demanding healthcare staff run themselves into the ground as an alternative to proper investment is a short-term fix that will only worsen the crisis in the NHS.”

Regional officer Tabusam Ahmed said: “This agreement would not have been reached without the hard work and solidarity of Unite’s reps and members at Guy’s and St Thomas’.”
